ok... lets see, i'm writing this entery because i just got back from my mission trip to Juarez, Mexico to build a house.
Well, i should start off about how i felt about going on the trip... i was increadible nervous about going, at the time i have finally said yes to going the WAITING list was full, so i was pretty sure i wasn't going to get to go, but then they desided that since so many kids wanted to go they should make it possible for everyone to go so they added more vans. then i hade to make a difficult dessision, the same week we were going to Mexico was the same week my family was going on vacation to Michigan. Also i had just started going to the youth group, and as many of you know believing in God again, so i didn't know weather or not to go on the trip.
in the end i think i made that right decision in going. and it was an awsome experience. the van ride down i got to know people from my church i didn't know very well, there were 11 people in my van including me and the drivers(there were two so they could switch off if they got tired and couldn't drive).
we left on a thursday and we finally got down there on sunday. at that time a new type of nervousness came over me, it would be the first time out of the US. before we crossed the boreder all of the vans stopped at this one place to group up and then cross over together. there were like 10 vans and it was just this long line of white 15 passanger vans driving down the street about the cross the border, i bet it looked really funny to the people in the town (we crossed over in El Paso, Texas (Amy how could you stand the heat down there)). everyone crossed the border just fine (getting into Mexico is really easy). and we set off for the church we would call home for the next 5 days.
The buildings in Juarez look very worn down and old, nothing really nice looking. and it smelled bad at the church we stayed at, i think it was the dogs that the church kept (no one was aloud to touch any dogs because of parasites). but anyway, we got settled into the church and then were free for the rest of the day, the following day was the first day of work and probably the hardest.
First day was concrete. that is all i should have to say but there needs to be more explaining for those who have never built a house or used concrete before. I'll explain the mixture first, it goes like this: (all measurements are in buckets) 1 water, 2 gravel, 2 sand, 1 cement, 1 gravel, 1 sand. and then the gravel and sand were on the opposite side of the work site and guess what! I GOT THE PLEASURE OF CARRYING HEAVY BUCKETS OF SAND AND FILLING THOSE BUCKETS!!!!!!! and then other stuff happend that same day, like one of the girls passed out and others were "feeling nausous" (i believe the other girls got scared and didn't want to pass out) so they stayed back at the church after we finnished the cementing because we got to have a siesta at that time for lunch and naps. while this was going on Tim, one of the adults on the trip was building the walls, with out him, and like 3 other people we would not have finnished the house, too many freshmen girls.
After siesta we put the walls up and put most of the black board on the house. then we went to the church and had devotions and slept (which is what we did everynight).
The next day we finished the black board, and did chicken wire, WHICH SUCKS!!!!! chicken wire has to be pulled tight other wise stucko doesn't stick to it, and there can be not bubbles. I HATE CHICKEN WIRE! while this was going on people were doing electrical and insilation. then after siesta we made the roof and put it up, the instalation was finished on the walls and the electrical on the cieling.
Day 3 - the roof had to be covered by tar paper, i didn't do this because i was sifting sand, I JUST LOVE SAND (sarcasim). also dry wall and the roof insilation were starting to be installed. after siesta we started stucko I LOVE THAT STUFF TOO (stupid stuff doesn't stick to the wall and trying to fix it is even harder), while we had a group stucoing there was another group doing dry wall. i wish i could have done dry wall, but now i know for next year. oh and we couldn't stop to go back to the church until stucko was finnished.
Last day of building - we finnished up all the little things left to do. this was awsome because we finnished, and before lunch too. then we dedicated the house, this was so awsome, first we had a person read from the bible different passages in spanish and in english, then the keys and a bible where passed around the entire group and then given to the family.
other things that i didn't mention will be added tomorrow if i get a chance if not the next day, but right now i'm really tired so talk to you guys latter |
